About the project
The growing social awareness across the globe has brought a number of issues to the fore among which gender equality and empowerment of women are very significant.Discrimination against women in the form of male-female differentiation constitute the core of gender-biased system .Gender refer to the “socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women .The empowerment is not essentially political alone;it is a process having personal, social, economic and political dimensions with personal empowerment being the core of empowerment process. The scheme of micro-financing through Self-help groups (SHGs) has transferred the real economic power in the hands of women and has considerably reduced their dependence on men .This has helped in the empowerment of women and building self-confidence, but lack of education often comes in the way and many a times they had to seek help from their husbands for day-to-day work i.e. bank, accounts etc. The higher level of learning will help them to learn skill and vocations and help them in playing an important role in the management of SHGs.
Centre for development communication took initiative to form Self-help groups (SHGs)for waste workers and provide them an alternate source of income. It helps them for the betterment of the life.
In Nagpur city, we have over 60 SHGs of waste workers. The waste workers generally works either with Municipal Corporation or under any private contractor but it is only the CDC’s initiative that we are trying to provide them some other livelihoo options so that they don’t need to depend on their traditional occupation. Similarly, we have initiated the project on micro-credit and self-help groups in Jaipur city. Our target group is mainly slum dwellers and unorganized sector. We have launched the livelihood project in Shastri Nagar slum in Jaipur with active community participation.
